Japan Itinerary Ideas

Choose a trip length below, then use the linked guides to build it. For an exact night-by-night breakdown of each length, see our trip-planning hub — this page focuses on which length fits your trip and where to go next.

7 days — the Golden Route

Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka cover Japan's classic highlights and connect easily by Shinkansen. Our 7-day itinerary is a full day-by-day plan — start there if this is your first trip.

10 days — add one region

Keep the Golden Route and add a single extra stop on the same line: Hiroshima and Miyajima west of Osaka, or a Kanto day trip such as Hakone or Nikko before you leave Tokyo.

14 days — add a second region

With two extra weeks, fly to Hokkaido or Okinawa for a slower, very different second half. Prefer mountains? A Kamikochi day trip from Nagano works well as an Alps add-on.

Which length should you pick?

  • First trip, under 10 days free: stick to the 7-day Golden Route. Adding a region just makes you rush all of them.
  • First trip, 10 to 14 days free: Golden Route plus one region — Hiroshima for history, Hokkaido for nature and food, Okinawa for beaches.
  • Repeat visitor who has already done Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka: skip the Golden Route and spend the whole trip in one region instead.
  • Traveling in cherry blossom or autumn leaf season: keep the route tighter and book peak-week hotels first — see our seasonal travel guides for timing.
  • Prefer fewer hotel changes: choose fewer, longer stays over adding more cities to the route.
