Okinawa Travel Guide
Okinawa is a strong Japan travel destination for beaches, islands, snorkeling, castle ruins, local food, and subtropical culture.
Quick facts
- Best for: beaches, islands, snorkeling, castle ruins
- Recommended stay: 1 to 3 days
- Best season: Spring, autumn, and key local festival seasons
- Main bases: Naha, Churaumi Aquarium, Ishigaki, Miyako Island
Why visit Okinawa
Okinawa is not a detour from mainland Japan so much as a different country within it: a subtropical island chain that was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom before it became a prefecture, with its own food, music and architecture. Shurijo Castle is the symbol of that kingdom; its main hall, the Seiden, is being rebuilt after the 2019 fire and the surrounding park stays open while the work continues. Churaumi Aquarium in the north is built around the vast Kuroshio Sea tank, where whale sharks and manta rays share one body of water. Further out, Ishigaki and Miyako hold the beaches people picture.
Getting to Okinawa
There is no rail link from the mainland — you fly, usually into Naha on the main island. The outer islands are a second flight or a ferry on top of that, so Ishigaki and Miyako are not day trips from Naha and need their own nights. On the main island itself the monorail only covers Naha, so a rental car is close to essential for reaching Churaumi and the northern coast. Okinawa also runs on a different calendar from the rest of Japan: its rainy season and typhoon risk arrive earlier, which is worth checking against your dates.

Shurijo Castle
Shurijo Castle in Naha was the political and cultural heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom for roughly 450 years, and its walls and gates remain a UNESCO World Heritage site even though the main hall itself burned down in October 2019 and is still being rebuilt.

Common questions
Can you visit Ishigaki or Miyako as a day trip from Naha?
No. Both are a second flight or a ferry beyond the main island, so they need their own nights rather than a day out of Naha.
Do you need a car in Okinawa?
On the main island, close to essential. The monorail only covers Naha, so reaching Churaumi Aquarium and the northern coast realistically means driving.
Can you visit Shurijo Castle while it is being rebuilt?
Yes. The main hall, the Seiden, is being rebuilt after the 2019 fire, and the surrounding park stays open while the work continues.
Is there a train from mainland Japan to Okinawa?
No. There is no rail link at all, so you fly, usually into Naha. Okinawa also runs on a different calendar from the rest of Japan, with its rainy season and typhoon risk arriving earlier.
