Kamikochi is one of the easiest big-mountain landscapes to enjoy without hiking gear, but it rewards an early, carefully booked day. From Matsumoto, the practical first-time route is bus-and-train transport to Taisho Pond, then a gentle downstream walk through the valley to Kappa Bridge and the bus terminal. You get the best scenery in a logical order and avoid retracing your steps.
This is a car-free plan for a full day. For the wider region, start with the Nagano travel guide. Transport details below were checked as of 2026-07-16; check the official site before visiting because road conditions, seats, fares and timetables can change.
The simple route: Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge
- Book: an outbound bus that stops at Taishoike (Taisho Pond), plus a return from Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
- Walk: Taisho Pond → Tashiro Pond and Tashiro Marsh → Tashiro/Hotaka bridges → Kappa Bridge.
- Distance: about 4 km; the official walking estimate is about 80 minutes of moving time.
- Finish: Kappa Bridge is about 0.3 km (roughly six minutes) from Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
The 80-minute estimate does not include photographs, toilets, a café stop or time on the boardwalk. Treat it as a calm half-day walk, not a transfer between buses. Stay on marked paths and boardwalks, take litter with you, and do not feed or collect wildlife.

Getting there from Matsumoto: the two sensible choices
Most flexible: take the Alpico Kamikochi Line train from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima, then change to the bus. As of 2026-07-16, the train costs ¥710 and the Shin-Shimashima–Kamikochi bus costs ¥3,100 one way, making ¥3,810 before any food or other extras. A published early example is the 6:31am train, connecting to a 7:10am bus and reaching Taisho Pond at 8:04am. Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours from Matsumoto once you include the connection and a buffer for road delays.
Fastest early start: the direct National Park Liner leaves Matsumoto Bus Terminal at 5:30am and is scheduled to reach Taisho Pond at 6:54am. Its 5:30am fare is ¥5,000, including a ¥400 early-morning supplement. There is also a 10:15am direct departure at ¥4,600, but it reaches Taisho Pond at 11:44am, so it is a poor fit for an unhurried full walk.

Reserve the bus legs as soon as the booking window opens. Alpico describes the service as reservation priority: a same-day ticket may be possible only if a seat remains. The direct bus is especially easy to misunderstand—there is no direct return service to Matsumoto, so return via Shin-Shimashima and the train. The train itself does not need a reservation.
A realistic first-time timetable
- Before departure: reserve the outbound stop at Taishoike and your return from Kamikochi Bus Terminal. Save both confirmations offline.
- Morning: arrive at Taisho Pond, take a few minutes for the mountain-and-water view, then begin walking downstream rather than returning to the bus terminal first.
- Late morning to early afternoon: follow the valley through Tashiro Marsh and the bridges. Add breathing room for the scenery; this is the point of choosing the one-way route.
- Afternoon: reach Kappa Bridge, have a break, and walk the short final stretch to the terminal well before your booked bus.
For 2026, the final listed departure from Kamikochi Bus Terminal is 5:55pm, reaching Matsumoto at 7:54pm via Shin-Shimashima. Do not build your day around that last bus. A 3:15pm or 4:40pm return gives you more margin if the walk, queues or road traffic take longer than expected.

Car restrictions and busy-day cautions
Do not plan to drive a rental car into Kamikochi. Private cars, rental cars and motorcycles are stopped before Kama Tunnel all year; from the Matsumoto side, drivers use Sawando parking and continue by shuttle bus or taxi. If that sounds inconvenient, it is usually simpler to begin from Matsumoto by public transport and keep the day car-free.
Summer holiday weekends, public holidays, Obon and the October foliage season are specifically identified by the official destination site as crowded periods. On those dates, reserve early, choose an earlier departure, and leave a generous buffer before your return. Weather and road conditions can also delay buses, so a later restaurant reservation in Matsumoto is not a good idea.
Before you go
Book transport first, then use your confirmed arrival and return to decide how long to spend at Kappa Bridge. Keep the official timetable handy, wear shoes suitable for an uneven natural trail, and bring water and a light layer even on a warm Matsumoto morning. Mobile data is useful for checking a delay or your booking while travelling.
