Seasonal Travel in Japan
Japan changes a lot by season, and timing affects both what you can see and how far in advance you need to book.
Spring — cherry blossoms
Peak bloom usually runs late March to early April in most of Honshu, later further north. Book hotels early for this window.
Autumn — koyo (fall colors)
Fall colors typically peak mid to late November in Kyoto and Tokyo, earlier in Hokkaido and Tohoku.
Winter — snow & onsen
Hokkaido and Tohoku offer snow travel and ski areas, and onsen towns are especially good for a slower winter trip.
Summer — festivals
Fireworks displays and summer festivals run July through August. Plan for heat and humidity, especially in cities.
