Kawagoe (Little Edo) — Saitama

Saitama Travel Guide

Saitama is a strong Japan travel destination for historic towns, railway museums, river walks, bonsai culture, and quick Tokyo side trips.

Quick facts

  • Best for: historic towns, railway museums, river walks, bonsai culture
  • Recommended stay: 1 to 3 days
  • Best season: Spring, autumn, and key local festival seasons
  • Main bases: Kawagoe, Railway Museum, Chichibu, Omiya Bonsai Village

Why visit Saitama

Saitama is where Tokyo residents go on a free afternoon, and that is a fair description of what it offers visitors too. Kawagoe is the main draw: a street of kurazukuri clay-walled merchant warehouses that survived the fires and rebuilding that erased them elsewhere, which is why the town is nicknamed Little Edo. Further out, Nagatoro runs traditional wooden boats down a rocky stretch of river, Chichibu Shrine anchors an old mountain town with a strong festival tradition, and the Railway Museum in Omiya is a serious collection rather than a diversion for children.

Getting to Saitama

Everything here is a short train ride from central Tokyo: Kawagoe is around half an hour on the Tobu or Seibu lines, and Omiya is a Shinkansen stop as well as a hub. That makes Saitama the easiest half-day escape in the Kanto region and a sensible use of a jet-lagged first morning or a spare afternoon before a flight. Nagatoro and Chichibu are further into the hills and take closer to two hours, so they are a day rather than an afternoon.
