Summer Travel in Japan: Festivals & Staying Cool
Summer (June–August) opens with a rainy season (tsuyu) that runs into mid-July across most of Honshu, followed by hot, humid weather and a full calendar of fireworks and matsuri. Hokkaido skips most of the tsuyu and stays noticeably cooler, and mountain areas offer a similar escape from the lowland heat and humidity.
Climate range
- Most of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu turn hot and humid from July, with the rainy season (tsuyu) running roughly June into mid-July beforehand.
- Hokkaido largely skips the rainy season and stays cooler and drier — Japan’s most reliable warm-weather escape from the heat.
- Typhoon risk rises from late summer into early autumn, occasionally disrupting trains and flights with little notice.
Crowds and booking
- Obon (mid-August) is Japan’s busiest domestic travel week — trains and hotels book out nationwide, so plan around it or reserve well ahead.
- Major fireworks festivals fill nearby hotels fast; book a few weeks ahead outside Obon, earlier for well-known displays.
- Outside Obon and fireworks dates, summer is generally easier to book than spring or autumn.
Where this season suits
Summer suits travelers who want fireworks and festivals in the cities, or a cooler nature-focused trip in Hokkaido or the mountains. Our Tokyo summer guide covers heat-smart city planning and rainy-afternoon options, Miyazaki’s mango season pairs farm visits with a slower coastal pace, and Mount Iwate’s summer trails offer a cooler mountain break.
What to pack and safety
- Light, breathable clothing and sun protection; humidity makes it feel hotter than the temperature alone suggests.
- Carry water and take heat seriously — heatstroke is a real risk during city sightseeing in July and August, and Japan issues regular heat advisories.
- A light rain jacket or umbrella for the tsuyu weeks in June and early July, and for sudden afternoon downpours later in summer.
- If a typhoon is forecast during your trip, check the Japan Meteorological Agency’s typhoon tracker and build slack into train and flight connections.
Checking exact event dates
Fireworks and matsuri dates are set separately by each city or shrine and change year to year. Check JNTO’s festivals and events listings or the event organizer’s own site for the current year’s date before booking nearby hotels or trains. Checked 2026-07-30.
Recommended prefectures for summer
Hokkaido
Skips most of the mainland's rainy season and stays cooler and drier, making it Japan's easiest warm-weather escape from the heat.
Miyazaki
Kyushu's mango season peaks in summer, alongside beaches and a slower, tropical pace on the coast.
Iwate
Mountain trails and cooler air around Mount Iwate make it a straightforward break from city heat and humidity.
