Winter

Winter Travel in Japan: Snow, Ski & Onsen

Hokkaido and Tohoku get consistent snow from December, while Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka usually see no more than the occasional light dusting. Winter splits into two very different trips: snow and ski travel in the north, or a slower, onsen-focused trip almost anywhere in the country.

Climate range

  • Hokkaido and Tohoku are consistently cold and snowy from December through February.
  • Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are cold but mostly dry, with clear skies common on the Pacific side and only occasional light snow.
  • Kyushu and Okinawa stay noticeably milder, making them a warmer-weather winter option.

Crowds and booking

  • New Year (roughly Dec 29–Jan 3) is Japan’s busiest domestic travel period — many businesses close, and trains and hotels book out nationwide.
  • Ski-town accommodation in Hokkaido and Nagano books up early, especially over the New Year and school-holiday weeks.
  • Outside New Year and peak ski weeks, winter is generally the easiest season to book hotels and Shinkansen seats.

Where this season suits

Winter suits travelers who want ski and snow travel in the north, or a slower, onsen-focused trip almost anywhere in the country. Our Sapporo guide covers where to base yourself for Hokkaido’s snow season. The prefectures below cover both the ski and onsen sides of the season.

What to pack and safety

  • Warm, wind-resistant layers for Hokkaido and Tohoku; a lighter coat is usually enough in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka.
  • Footwear with grip matters in snow country — pavements and steps can ice over, especially in the mornings.
  • If driving or taking rural buses in snow regions, check road and service conditions directly with the operator, since winter weather can disrupt schedules with little notice.

Checking exact event dates

Illuminations, snow festivals and ski-season opening dates are set separately by each city, resort or event organizer and change year to year. Check JNTO’s festivals and events listings or the event organizer’s own site for the current year’s dates before booking non-refundable hotels or trains. Checked 2026-07-30.

Recommended prefectures for winter

Japan's main ski and snow-festival region, with consistent snow from December through the New Year holidays.

Nagano

Ski resorts such as Hakuba are an easy Shinkansen-plus-bus trip from Tokyo, without needing to fly north.

Oita

Beppu and Yufuin make it Japan's onsen capital, for a slower, snow-optional winter trip built around hot springs.
