Fukuoka is one of Japan’s easiest airport arrivals because the city center is unusually close to the runway. The one detail that catches first-time visitors out is the terminal layout: the subway station is in the Domestic Terminal, while many international arrivals land at the separate International Terminal. Choose your route by terminal first, then by whether your hotel is near Hakata or Tenjin.
This guide covers the simple choices. For broader planning after arrival, see the Fukuoka travel guide and the site’s Japan transport guides.
The quick answer
- Staying near Hakata: from the Domestic Terminal, take the Airport Line subway to Hakata. It is about five minutes; the adult one-way fare is ¥260 as of 2026-07-14.
- Arriving at the International Terminal and staying near Hakata: the direct Nishitetsu bus is the lowest-transfer option. It goes to Hakata Station Chikushi Exit in about 18 minutes for ¥400 adult fare, as of 2026-07-14.
- Staying near Tenjin: use the Airport Line from the Domestic Terminal. JNTO lists the ride to Tenjin at about 11 minutes; the adult one-way fare is ¥260 as of 2026-07-14.
- Arriving at the International Terminal for Tenjin: take the free inter-terminal shuttle to the Domestic Terminal, then use the subway. Allow extra time for the transfer; the airport shows the shuttle journey as about 10 minutes.
First, identify your terminal
The subway is connected to the Domestic Terminal building. If you have arrived internationally, do not look for a subway platform beside the International Terminal: follow the airport signs for the free inter-terminal shuttle, then enter Fukuoka Airport Station at the Domestic Terminal. This is the important distinction to make before choosing the fast subway route.

The direct International Terminal bus is a particularly good fallback when your hotel is close to Hakata and you want to avoid the shuttle plus subway transfer with luggage. Schedules, stops and traffic conditions can change, so check the airport and Nishitetsu sites before travel day.
Domestic Terminal to Hakata: use the subway
For most visitors staying by Hakata Station, the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line is the obvious choice. JNTO lists the ride at around five minutes, and the airport-to-Hakata adult fare is ¥260 as of 2026-07-14. Hakata is the best arrival base if you are continuing by JR train, taking the shinkansen, or want a hotel that makes an early departure simple.

Buy a single ticket at the station machine if this is your only subway ride, or use a compatible IC card if you already have one. The subway operator publishes the current fare and ticket rules; check the official site before visiting because fares and payment options can change.
Domestic Terminal to Tenjin: stay on the Airport Line
Tenjin is a stronger base for shopping, restaurants, nightlife and central-city walks. From Fukuoka Airport Station, stay on the Airport Line to Tenjin. JNTO gives an approximate travel time of 11 minutes; the adult airport-to-Tenjin fare is ¥260 as of 2026-07-14. There is no need to change trains for this route.

If you are arriving at the International Terminal, the subway option still works well for Tenjin once you have taken the free shuttle to the Domestic Terminal. Build the terminal change into your plan rather than treating the short rail time as the whole airport-to-hotel journey.
Which route should you choose?
- Choose the subway if you are at the Domestic Terminal, want Hakata or Tenjin, and are comfortable taking one simple rail line.
- Choose the direct International Terminal bus if you are going to Hakata and would rather avoid transferring terminals with luggage.
- Choose the shuttle plus subway if you arrive internationally and are staying in Tenjin or another location that is easier from the Airport Line.
- Choose a taxi only when your hotel location, luggage, mobility needs or arrival time makes the extra cost worthwhile; use the airport’s official taxi information for the current arrangement.
A calmer first hour in Fukuoka
Before leaving the terminal, make sure you have mobile data or offline maps, your hotel address, and the right terminal route. A Japan eSIM can make the first transfer easier for route checks and hotel messages. Once you have settled in, browse tours and tickets only for experiences that fit your Fukuoka plan rather than trying to schedule the arrival day too tightly.
