Udo Shrine built inside a sea cave in Miyazaki

Udo Shrine Complete Travel Guide

Udo Shrine is one of the few shrines in Japan built directly inside a sea cave, tucked into a cliff on the Nichinan coast south of Miyazaki city, with a vivid red-lacquered main hall and ocean views that make it one of the prefecture's most photographed sights.

Best Things to Do

  • Walk down the approach path and steps to the vermilion shrine building set inside the sea cave itself.
  • Try the undama luck-ball toss at Kameishi (turtle rock) below the shrine, said to grant a wish if the clay ball lands in the small hollow on top.
  • Take in the coastal rock formations and ocean views around the cape before heading back up.
  • Stop at the small shops near the entrance for local snacks and charms.

Tickets and Fees

Checked in July 2026: no admission fee. The shrine grounds are generally open from early morning to early evening; hours can shift seasonally, so it is worth a quick check if you are arriving very early or late in the day.

How to Get There

By public transport, take the JR Nichinan Line to Udo-Jingu Station, then a short bus or taxi ride to the shrine entrance, as it is not an easy walk from the station. Driving from Miyazaki city takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour along the coastal road, with parking available near the entrance.

Nearby Attractions

Combine this with Sun Messe Nichinan, a short drive further south, or head back north to Aoshima Shrine to round out a full Nichinan coast day.
