Aoshima Shrine Complete Travel Guide
Aoshima Shrine sits on a small subtropical island just off the Miyazaki coast, reached by a footbridge across a striking natural rock shelf known as the Devil's Washboard, and it works well as a half-day beach-and-shrine stop south of Miyazaki city.
Quick Facts
Best Things to Do
- Cross the short bridge onto Aoshima Island and visit the small, brightly decorated shrine set among subtropical plants.
- Walk out onto the Devil's Washboard, the ridged rock shelf that rings the island and formed through natural erosion over a very long span of time.
- Look for the ema and charms tied to marriage and safe travel, the shrine's traditional focus.
- Continue along Aoshima Beach on the mainland side for a longer coastal walk if the weather is good.
Tickets and Fees
Checked in July 2026: no admission fee for the shrine or the island. Opening hours are roughly sunrise to sunset, so this is a daytime-only stop.
How to Get There
Take the JR Nichinan Line to Aoshima Station, then walk about 10 minutes to the shrine entrance. From Miyazaki Station the train ride is around 25 to 30 minutes. Driving from central Miyazaki takes about 30 to 40 minutes, with paid parking near the island entrance.
Nearby Attractions
This pairs naturally with Udo Shrine further down the Nichinan coast, and with Sun Messe Nichinan if you are continuing south for a full coastal day.
