Iya Valley Travel Guide

Vine bridge in Iya Valley, Tokushima

Iya Valley Complete Travel Guide

Iya Valley is a remote, steep-sided mountain valley in western Tokushima known as one of Japan's least-visited scenic areas, most famous for the Iya Kazurabashi, a hand-woven vine bridge strung over the Iya River gorge.

Quick Facts

PricePaid for the main vine bridge crossing, roughly yen 550 for adults and yen 350 for children; roadside gorge viewpoints nearby are free.
Time neededHalf a day for the Kazurabashi area alone; a full day if you add the remote Oku-Iya double vine bridges or a river boat ride.
Best timeSpring and autumn for mild weather and foliage; bridge crossing hours run shorter in winter, so check the season before visiting.
Good forNature and hiking fans, couples, and travelers wanting a genuine rural mountain side of Shikoku away from the coast.

Best Things to Do

  • Cross the Iya Kazurabashi, a vine bridge suspended over the Iya River that is rebuilt periodically using traditional weaving methods.
  • Look carefully through the gaps in the bridge deck to the gorge below - it is more exposed underfoot than photos suggest.
  • Continue to the remote Oku-Iya Kazurabashi, the 'husband and wife' double bridges, if you have a car and more time.
  • Stop at a roadside viewpoint over the Iya Gorge, or take a short sightseeing boat ride on the river.

Tickets and Fees

Checked in July 2026: crossing fees and operating hours for the vine bridge change by season, and same-day reservations are typically accepted only until mid-afternoon. During Golden Week and Obon, waits of two hours or more are possible, so it's worth checking current conditions or arriving early.

How to Get There

The valley is remote and best reached by car. From JR Oboke Station, a local bus (around 30 minutes) runs to the Kazurabashi stop. By car, Iya Valley is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Tokushima City; a rental car makes it much easier to see more than one bridge in a day.

Nearby Attractions

Iya Valley is a separate trip from central Tokushima City, but if you're touring the prefecture more broadly, it can be paired with a coastal day at the Naruto Whirlpools.
