Ibusuki Sand Baths Complete Travel Guide
Ibusuki, on the Satsuma Peninsula south of Kagoshima City, is known for naturally heated black-sand baths on the beach, where staff bury you up to the neck in warm volcanic sand. It's a distinctly different onsen experience from a standard hot spring bath and works well as a half-day trip.
Quick Facts
Best Things to Do
- Change into the provided yukata robe before heading down to the beach.
- Lie down in the marked sand area and let staff bury you in warm black sand for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Rinse off and follow up with the indoor hot spring bath included in admission.
- Try local specialties like satsuma-age fish cakes or shochu, both associated with the wider Ibusuki and Kagoshima area.
Tickets and Fees
Checked in July 2026: admission prices can rise during peak periods such as New Year, Golden Week, and Obon, so check the Saraku official site for current rates before your visit.
How to Get There
From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take the JR Ibusuki-no-Tamatebako limited express or a regular train to Ibusuki Station, a trip of roughly 1 hour. From Ibusuki Station, Saraku Sand Bath Hall is about a 15 to 20 minute walk or a short local bus ride.
Nearby Attractions
Ibusuki is a natural pairing with the volcano views back at Sengan-en Garden in Kagoshima City, or as a relaxing finish after a more active day at Sakurajima Volcano.
