Dogo Onsen Complete Travel Guide
Dogo Onsen is one of Japan's oldest hot springs, with a bathing history said to stretch back over 3,000 years, and its wooden Honkan bathhouse is one of the country's most iconic onsen buildings, widely noted as an inspiration for the bathhouse in Spirited Away.
Quick Facts
Best Things to Do
- Bathe in the historic Kami-no-Yu or Tama-no-Yu baths inside the wooden Honkan building, one of Japan's oldest bathhouses still in daily use.
- Walk the Honkan's creaking corridors and, on the higher-tier tickets, view the Yushinden room built for Emperor Meiji.
- Stroll the covered Dogo Onsen shopping arcade for local sweets, souvenirs, and free foot baths.
- Look for the Bocchan Karakuri Clock near the tram terminus, which performs an animated show on the hour.
Tickets and Fees
Checked in July 2026: the Honkan reopened fully in July 2024 after a multi-year renovation, and admission is tiered by which baths and rooms you access. Tickets are sold at the counter on a walk-in basis; advance booking generally isn't needed for the basic bathing tier, but arrive early on weekends since some upper tiers have limited daily capacity.
How to Get There
Take the Iyotetsu tram from Matsuyama City Station or JR Matsuyama Station to the Dogo Onsen terminus, about 20 to 25 minutes total. The Honkan sits at the end of the covered shopping arcade, a short walk from the tram stop.
Nearby Attractions
Matsuyama Castle sits about 20 minutes away by tram and pairs well as a same-day stop; see the Matsuyama Castle guide. For a slower-paced day, the preserved merchant streets of Uchiko Town make a good half-day trip from Matsuyama.
