Best Things to Do

  • Walk the cedar-lined approach to the main shrine hall, one of Niigata's most respected Shinto sites with a history said to span over 2,000 years.
  • Take the Yahikoyama Ropeway, about a 5-minute ride, up Mt Yahiko for views over the Echigo Plain and toward the Sea of Japan.
  • Check whether the shrine's treasure hall is open during your visit for a look at historical items tied to the shrine.
  • Combine with a walk around Yahiko Park, which is known for its autumn maples and small shopping street near the station.

Tickets and Fees

Checked in July 2026: the shrine itself has no entry fee. Ropeway fares and operating hours can change seasonally, especially around winter weather, so check ahead if the ropeway is the main reason for your visit.

How to Get There

Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Tsubame-Sanjo Station, then transfer to the local Yahiko Line to Yahiko Station. The shrine is about a 15-minute walk from the station, and the ropeway base is a further walk or short shuttle bus ride beyond the shrine.
